I decided to hook up my 12si alternator that I installed about a year ago (I have been running around town on just the battery). I purchased a kit from MAD http://www.madelectrical.com/ to wire the alternator without an idiot light(#ALT-1). The kit was great! It had plenty of wire, a diode, heat-shrink tubing, and connectors. I even wired the original key switch into the system. After I started the engine and checked that I was making voltage, I shut it down using the key!!
A few days later after work I started to change out fuel pumps and discovered the real problem. When I first got my truck to run (about six years ago) I installed an inline filter. The problem was I placed the filter lower that the tank, so when I changed it out I was in a hurry to not get drenched by the fuel pouring out. In my haste I did not get the outlet hose on properly so the fuel pump was sucking air.
Back to the FLAPS for more fuel line, rerouted the filter so it can be replaced without much spillage. Now it runs great! BTW, I replaced the fuel filter about the same time I did the alternator wiring. Neal
