  • Electrical: Replacement Electronic Voltage Regulator

First post by a Forum Newbie
Can someone out there tell me which electronic voltage regulator ( Name , model number etc.) can be made to fit inside the original Prestolite Voltage Regulator, as used on 1963/64 Avantis.
I seem to recall there was a Transpo unit that would work but, shortly after information was published, the Transpo unit was NLA.
    Thanks JLB

There is an electronic voltage regulator for 1963, 64 regular alternators for cars and trucks. It looks just like the original for cars and trucks, but does NOT work with Avanti 40 AMP unit alternators. I am not sure that there is one that does. If it was ever out there, T bow or Meyers probably knows of it. I'd like one of those myself.

I bought an electronic voltage regulator for my '63 Hawk that has the same form/fit/function as the original OEM part on ebay a year or two ago. It has worked perfectly, I don't know if it would pass judging scrutiny but it's possible the covers could interchange for show. PM me and I can provide the seller's info.

The regulator you need is a Prestolite P8-410. The new one I have is in a Transpo box and has a Transpo sticker on the regulator. I bought this two years ago and dont know if they are still available.

If you cant find one let me know and I will check where I bought mine.

The one for the Avanti is a different animal than a Lark/hawk........... ( I stock the Lark Hawk types for 20 bucks) (the ones for Avanti are generally NOS and cost a lot more than that)

The Transpo 590 unit was replaced by WAI (yes, that is the name of the company) #35-113. At the time I bought mine, I was told it was available only from auto electric rebuilders. Try Floyd's Electric Service in Grand Rapids, MI 616-534-8691. If the unit is still available, they should have it or be able to get it.

This unit has all the features of the Transpo unit and hooks up in the same manner. It will fit inside of an original gutted and modified Avanti mechanical VR box.
