  • Transmission / Overdrive: putting an auto in the hawk

I have a great running 259, I will be putting in to my 62 hawk. It is currently a 4 speed. I have a smooth 3 speed over drive to mate with the 259 and they were together in the donor car. Wife Kathy ie K in the K-hawk. Suggested if the Hawk had an auto in it she could drive it. What would be the best brand x tranny to use with the 259.

Is there a reason you want a brand X instead of the one that Studebaker used?

Make sure you consider the rear axle ratio when replacing transmissions with different types.

Studebaker generally put 3.31 ratio differentials into 1962 cars with V-8 automatics. If the automatic transmission you are considering has an overdrive, like a 700R4 or a 200 R4 (or whatever it is called) then you might want to put a 3.73 differential behind it.

No. Perhaps the Borg-Warner that Mr. Vines suggested is just the ticket.
