I have a 50 champion convertible, I have 5 lug wheels on a new suspension , radial tires, I have full size hub caps and cant keep them on the car . Started with the passenger front tire rejecting the cap first , than the other front, I sharpened the edges , realigned the tips and still had the same problem, the rears are also coming loose but not comming all the way off. Are there caps that only work on certain wheels. other than the ones with the clips??????????????????

Seems to me I just had that conversation with someone, but can't remember who. From what I understand you can change the rims, and the caps *look* like they fit snug, but don't take any fast corners, or hit any bumps. I'd be interested in hearing if there's a solution, as I'm changing the rims on my Hawk, and I don't really want to be chasing after my caps.

I had the same problem after installing radial tires on my 52 Starliner, I think they make the rim flex more. I pulled all the discs and gently bent all the serrated tabs up slightly. I haven't had one come off now in over 2000 miles

Had this same problem with my '53. I was running stock stude rims with radials. I read someplace about using some stuff called "marine goop" to put glue globs on the rims either side of the cap grippers and also a little on the grippers themselves. Found this stuff for sale in Menards, Lowes, etc. Tried it and it does work but the caps can be too hard to get off then if you get too much on. I have since switched to new ford crown victoria rims and was thinking this problem would not happen but it still did so I am back to putting the "goop" on them. You need to be very careful in applying it and letting dry some before putting the cap on or it will really be glued on and run the risk of damaging it trying to get it off when you want it off.

I had this problem with my '53 with original wheels and wheel covers with Bias Ply tires. It seemed like the grippers got tired. I put 63 Lark wheel covers on and had no problem at all. Then I replaced them with 'Speedster" wire wheel covers (lug nuts hold them on.) Haven't lost one in three years.
