Hi all... my wife and I just bought a 55 Champion and I have a couple of questions. One (and this is stupid, I know) - what kind of gas should I use?

Two: The fuel pump is leaking gas big time. This car has been converted to 12 volt system. Where can I get a rebuilt fuel pump? What should I expect to pay?

Three: We trailered it home. Upon arrival, I noticed gas leaking from somewhere on the driver's side of the fuel tank itself (possibly broken fuel line from the trailer ride?).

Welcome to the exciting world of Studebakers! If your car still boasts it original flathead Champion motor, regular gas will work just fine.

In terms of a fuel pump, your could try your local FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store i.e. NAPA, etc.) or go to the home page of this site. On the left you will see a number of buttons, scroll to the bottom and click on "Valuable Links". Near the bottom of the page you will see a link for Studebaker vendors.

Your leak could be from a bad tank, bad fuel line or bad filler line.

Thanks for the great advice... and, yes, it is the original flathead 6. Starts and runs. Can't wait to get the fuel pump/line fixed so I can teach my bride how to drive a "three on the tree!"

Hi Skip,

The advice given about fuel pumps and lines is good, but there's one point that has me stymied from your original post. In the same breath, you mentioned that the car's been converted to 12 volts. While this should have nothing to do with a stock fuel pump (it being strictly mechanical) I'm left wondering if you didn't share the voltage info because your Champion's been fitted with an electric fuel pump. Is this the case??? If so, you can get a 12 volt fuel pump at just about any auto parts store. The little FACET brand pumps seem popular and serve best when mounted back close to the fuel tank.

As to the leak at the rear, it can be either one of the hoses mentioned and it can also be a faulty gasket around the gas gage sending unit on top of the tank. Which side of the tank the gas wasa dripping from wouldn't necessarily indicate the true location of the leak.:)

BTW - Welcome aboard! We're glad you came! Studebakering is a disease and we can help you with your addiction. Any one of us can help you find your SECOND Stude once you realize you're hooked.;)

Also - what body style Champion do you have? If you'll read us the info on the firewall tag (near the right hand hood hinge), we'll be able to peg it to a tee. That tag should start out reading: 16G6-

I too have a 55Champion but with automatic. Welcome to the most informative,and open-minded{so-far] bunch of good shade tree and EXPERT club members I have ever run across. If I can interject,ALL the fuel lines and brake rubber should be checked B4 the light of your life should Learn how to drive a stickshift.Also if you do have a gas leak at the sending unit.It wouldn't be a bad idea to take the sending unit off and look in the tank.It might have crud from sitting{like mine,,altho I should have used a flashlite].Welome

this is just my opinion but I would buy a fuel pump rebuild kit from a reputable vendor rather than a new production pump. The FP is not that hard to rebuild yourself and likely the problem with it is just the diaphragm has cracked from age. I've had "issues" with the new production pumps however and at least for V-8s they are not identical to original and do not have an integral filter like original.

OK. Well 16G6 is 1955 codespeak for a '55 Champion (185Cu.in. flathead 6 engine). The W means it's a 4-door sedan and the 4 indicates it sports the "Deluxe" trim level.:D

By the way.... the number below that is the body number. It tells you where - in the sequence of 4-door Champion bodies that were welded together - that particular body(not whole car)stands. The body assemblies weren't coordinated in lockstep with the sequence (serial numbers) of cars produced. What I'm trying to convey is that if the body number says (just for instance)12763, that wouldn't be an indication that YOUR Champion 4-door was the 12,763rd one built.
