Just purchased a '57 Transtar 1/2 ton pick-up.... it left the factory with a Commander 6, but now has a transplanted 2 bbl 289 V8 installed:D. I am trying to figure out the year of this motor... The serial number is "PH37". I have never encountered the "H" before. Anyone have any ideas? By the way, it has a full flow oil filter and a paper air cleaner, so I am guessing a late '62 to 64 car engine, but? Thanks.:)

PH37 It's a '64 car 289 built Aug. 7, 1963 that should be a GOOD one Mark, full flow and 289, last year of production WOW! a keeper![^]

Now the BIG question is: did the PO do the required "dial-in" of the truck bellhousing to the car block? [:0]

Does it have the correct TRUCK bellhousing?

Is this a Overdrive truck with the correct removable side cover T-85 HD Trans.? Or did he try to "Jerryrig" the T-86 from the Big 6 in there?

I'm not sure of the answer to your questions, but I can tell you this... The truck came from the factory with a "Big 6" and a 4 speed trans. Over 20 years ago the 289 and a 3 spd. w o/d were transplanted into him together. The floor shifter was retained for the trans. It runs and shifts great.:) Thanks for the engine info![8D]

Mark; you cannot "retain" a floor shifter from a granny low HD 4 speed truck and make it fit a T85 side cover or T86 3 speed, top cover trans.[:0]

It would have to be a "conversion kit" floor speed shifter or an old 1935/'60's Taxi/or Jeep floor shift top cover.

This has to be an interesting truck![^]
