When installed in my 1963 289 block, the pressure relief valve cap does not reach the end of the spring. It is about 1/16 inch away. That means there is no pressure at all bearing on the spring when the engine is off. Is this normal? Can anyone tell me the correct spring length?
Thanks.

Are you sure it is not touching when the nut is tight? The Studebaker vendors should have the spring.

The spring and the piston/insert are the same from 6 to V-8, but the thing you are calling the valve cap is different from 6 to V-8. Is there any possibility that you have a 6 cylinder valve cap?

Neither the shop manual nor the parts manual show the spring length, but it is common Studebaker knowledge that you must not attempt to stretch the spring.

It sounds like your Relief Valve PISTON is missing, or wrong?
