  • Transmission / Overdrive: T-85 Tranny Rear Seal; Making Do

    I searched this NG today, hoping someone woulda came up with a substitute seal. Looks like nothing is a direct replacement, but there are several good innovations. However, no matter which course a person chooses, it's gonna be a PITA.
    So I chose to do again what I did the last time: slip National Seal #470682, which has the correct ID, inside a seal with the correct OD. I can't find a part number on the spare one of those I have, but the dimensions are 40 x 72 x 10 MM. First, gotta cut out the inner seal lip, then coat the insides with good sealant, then slip #470682 inside (fits perfectly), then rivet the two together. The last one I did lasted till I removed the tranny about 50,000 miles later.
    If anyone ever comes up with a direct replacement it sure would be nice. But I would not replace with an OEM type, even if it were available. It took about an hour chisel to get the old one out this morning.

    Hi, Joe,

    I've got a substitute which will work. It requires using a Speedi-Sleeve on the output yoke, but those are usually worn enough to need one anyway.

    Unfortunately, I'm not home just now to look it up for you. I'll be able to give it to you first of the week.

      Jack, I'd appreciate that info, but I hope to get the car back together today and drive it about 300 miles tomorrow. Gotta drop my daughter off at violin summer school on the other end of the state.

            Just looked in my seal book and found a seal number that might work #4889 Timken. The od is 2.840" and calls for the housing bore to be 2.833" (72mm is 2.834). Neal

              Rear seal for the T85 C/R (Chicago Rawhide) list it as # 15005 and National Seal list it as # 470380. Hope this helps

                Are you sure that is for the Overdrive T-85 Dan? The Standard 3 speed is different and available, but nobody has ever found any Overdrive Tail Seals.

                Have you purchased these in the last 2 or 3 decades?

                    I don't know how you came up with that number (I couldn't even find it in Timkin's on-line catalog), but looking at the ID, OD and thickness, it looks like a drop in. I found several of them (National brand) on ebay for $5-10 each. They are listed as an automatic tranny seal for misc Chryslers, 1993-2007. I don't know what type of seal it is, but if it works in an automatic, it is probably up to the chore in a T85.

                    Of course, as JV mentioned, most of the output yoke shafts are trashed, so most T85s could use a readi-sleeve.

                      The answer to that one is really simple, the smaller Trans. all use the R-10 BW Overdrive, the heavy Duty T-85 and T-89 (Truck) use the heavy Duty R-11 Overdrive.

                      That Seal seems to be pecular to ONLY the T-85 Overdrive. And most Fords get the slide-in driveshaft yoke Tranny with a different Seal, so those do not cross over to Stude. and Packard.

                          I learned a long time ago when I worked in an automotive warehouse, never throw away old catalogs with cross references in them. Neal

                            I double checked the catalogs and the (1988) CR catalog list seal 15005 for the T85 O.D. trans. The National Seal catalog (1991) cross reference list seal # 470380 for that same T85 O.D. transmission. Hope this helps.

                              Joe,

                              Depending on which T-85/89 transmission you are needing a seal for. The 56-57 passanger car and all trucks using the early transmission us the same 1540818 seal. 58-59 pass. changes to 1545164 seal. There are several possiblilites available. The original seal is still available via Studebaker vendor(s). The original seal crosses to C/R 15771, or Nalt. 473234. The later seal crosses to C/R 16744. NAPA shows these numbers cross to modern replacement seals. NAPA number 16719, 16871, the C/R 15771 number crosses too, but I have misplaced that number.

                              I hope this helps.
