  • Transmission / Overdrive: 75 Avanti, 700R4 tranny removal...pull engine????????

My 75 has a relatively new 700R4 tranny behind a Chevy small block (it was install same time engine was rebuilt). Tranny works good; however, it has a higher stall torque convertor with no lock-up provisions. I want to pull the tranny and change the TQ and add lock-up wiring.

Anyone know if you can slide the 700R4 rearward enough and then drop down. Do not want to pull the engine.

    Thanks in advance

The plus is that the 700R4 is about 6" shorter than a Powershift. You can get the Powershift out by backing it up and dropping the case off the bellhousing, but the 700 has it's own bellhousing and it's larger bulk alone would most likely hamper that method... I still have pics of you want to see. It might be doable....

Thanks Bob, good info. I would feel more comfortable if someone actually dropped a 700R4. I was wondering if I could loosen the 700R4, slide back and swap out the torgue converter without removing from car since it has the 'open bellhousing' on bottom

Maybe someone has done it, and will speak-up. The tranny shops of course just do know with no Avanti experience.

If you got a pic handy that might help a bit

      many thanks

I replaced a 700R4 with a 200R4 in my 83 Avanti. The 700 will drop out when you remove the rear mount plate but I don't remember if it had to be pushed rearward then down or just down and out. The 200R4 though just went in with no issues. Remember to be sure you don't crush the distributor into the firewall if you tilt the engine down.

If necessary, I'll see if I can scare up a shot but when you look at the setup it will be evident.

Here are a couple pics of the 700 laying on the chassis

            Thanks all

I can see my way clear on this now. I did crawl under the car and measure, the tranny tail will drop thru the "X" frame.

I successfully dropped the 700R4 tranny without pulling engine. I replaced the torque converter with lower stall speed. Drives much better.

              Thanks all
