  • Drive Shaft: 64 hawk u-joints

Does anyone know how to tell if the rear u-joint in a 64 Hawk is a Spicer or Mechanics u-joint? I can't see a name or part number on the joint, so by looking at it what is the difference between the two brands.

    Thanks, Mark

The way they are retained in the driveshaft. The Spicer joint has the familiar 'snap ring' outside of the cap. There is a groove in outside edge of the flange. Mechanics joints have a groove in the bearing cap and a 'c' clip retains the cap from inside the flange.
You will notice that the bearing is flush with the flange and wonder if someone left out the snap ring of a regular (spicer) u-joint.
