  • Interior: Best sound upgrade ever

I put good quality 6X9 coaxial speakers in the rear deck of my Daytona and equally good 6 1/2" in the kick panels along with subwoofers under the seats, but have never been happy with the sound - until now.

These tweeters are awesome - sound is much clearer, no distortion over the wind noise and the price is right.

Tweeters are one of the most overlooked, but most significant purchases you can make for a sound system. Everyone keeps thinking "lower lower lower" buying bigger and bigger subs and amps, and then they scratch their heads wondering why their $5000 sound system sounds muddier than the banks of the Mississippi during flood season. The high frequencies, 1k-15k are where you get the bright, crisp "pop" that makes music sound so clear.

I'm nowhere near needing to do a stereo install on my car, but I'm already making plans. Dynamat everything, A decent midrange set of speakers to drive the audio, some tweeters, and a nice EQ going to the stereo. I might install a sub for looks, but I'm really tempted to mod the front seat to install a Buttkicker (see it here). THe problem with Subwoofers is that the acoustic waves in bass are so big that they don't hit their full peak by the time they reach you, even in a trunk install. Of course, they WILL reach your neighboring cars, and annoy the heck out of them. The buttkicker delivers the "thump" of the bass, without the actual subwoofer. With these things, you could get away with a low end midrange speaker, and get 99% of the same audio you'd hear with a sub, but a way richer experience. We used the full size ones on drum thrones, and let me tell you, they ROCK!

Best sound upgrade for me has been my sound mat....Rattle trap Xtreme. Almost the same as DynaMat but comes in rolls instead of squares. Rattle trap is actually slightly thicker than DM.

      Sound system comes next.

I know people who swear by rattle trap. It does look like good stuff. I've used dynamat xtreme before, and it's just a beautiful product. The foil surface makes it look sharp going in (and indeed it is sharp...literally. wear protective gloves!!)

The nice thing about these products are that they actually help boost the bass frequencies, so you won't need the massive subs and an amp with it's own battery and alternator to get a good rich sound. Plus, they also inhibit rust when you install em properly, and what Studebaker couldn't use help in that department? (I mean, aside from the fiberglass portions of the Avanti's)

I had a tweeter got in my shop, a few days ago and left a deposit on my work bench.

A good woofer would solve your problem. <g>

Absolutely true Jim. The low bass notes are as much felt as heard, but when you hear the crack of a bass note, it's really a high frequency note. Tweeters matter!
