  • Engine: size of front crankshaft bolt

I'm working on a '51 Commander I recently brought home. It has the 232 V-8, and I'm trying to free it up.

The front crankshaft bolt is larger than any of the tools I have. I'm having trouble measuring it across the flats (engine is still installed). Does anyone know what size socket or wrench I should use on it? Also, are the threads left-hand or right-hand?

    Thanks for your help.

It is 1 1/2 " normal righty tighty, lefty loosey. You have to bend the ears of the "french lock" locking tab out of the way first.
