Dad went in after we noticed the portable meter said his heart/blood pressure was off.

He is in ICU after they spent all night working on him and we are hopefull he'll be awake for visits in the morning.

03-27-2012, 03:14 AM
I hate hearing stuff like this happen to good people. Give your Dad my best wishes, and hopes for a speedy recovery.

03-27-2012, 03:18 AM

All the best to your dad. Let us know where he is and when he's well enough to receive non-family visitors; I'd like to stop by and jaw a while.

I hope your dad gets better soon, Mike! I was just reading an answer he posted a couple of days ago and thinking about the wealth of information he (and you) brings to this forum. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Same here, for the whole family.

03-27-2012, 10:11 AM
Rich and his sons all have given so much to in the way of great parts help, great info help, support for my project and moral support. We have a few mutual friends and even though I have never met your family in person, you all feel like friends and I sure appreciate all of you.

My prayers will be for all of you. May Jah comfort you. Because you specifically asked for a spiritual thing, I will post a couple of comforting scriptures, Look up Isaiah 41:13 and Romans 15:5 for some directed comfort.

03-27-2012, 10:26 AM
I'd like to thank you all for the well wishes!!!

Shortly I will call for an update on Dad...

I'd post one now, but forgot one minor detail that we were told last night-
"do not try to to call during our shift change, because we won't be able to answer your questions"

Mike or I will post more when we know more about Dad's condition.

03-27-2012, 10:27 AM
Mike , I hope the best for your dad, and if he is awake and talking today just say hi and tell him I and other in the Bay area wish him a quick recovery, he is one of the best around and also one of a kind, straight forward guy, no beating around the bush with him, take care...Bob and the rest of the Sequoia chapter.

Thanks once again everybody.

I just got an update from the ICU folks. They are hopeful, but not much has changed- he is still attached to lots of machines and on lots of meds. The hope is that sometime tomorrow they will let him be 'awake' just enough to talk with us for a very short time. I will let him know of your well wishes when I talk with him.

Dave, I am sure once they let him wake up he will figure out a way to get the machines that are hooked up to him working better...he seems to get everything else working better.
Keep us informed of his progress.

My thoughts are with Richard and all of the Gahlbeck family. I hope everything works out.

03-28-2012, 12:53 AM
I've known Richard since grade school, we're from the same town in California so, this news was hard to take-in when I first learned of his trouble.
After reading ALL these heart warming thoughts and prayers from his 'extended family' I'm getting a little emotional here. Just goes to show the impact he's had on so many of you fine and thoughtful people. He's not out of the woods yet; keep those prayers going and the warm thoughts as well for his full recovery. Along with Rich's family, may I thank you too for your kind consideration...

03-28-2012, 03:44 AM

Good friends are hard to come by, especially these days. I really enjoyed having Rich stay with me last year albeit way too short. Get well so we can do it again....SOON!!!

03-28-2012, 02:14 PM
We hoped to see him alert for a moment, and we did. I saw him alert for a moment, he squeezed my hand when he heard me, asked the nurse for a shot of water and dozed off.

Dave will update us this evening on the progress we hope to see today and the address some of you asked for to send a card.

Thanks Mike and Dave & Family

03-28-2012, 02:39 PM
At least he just asked for a "shot" of water. My wife is an RN at our local hospital and she had a patient last week that asked for a beer and some meth....welcome to Elsinore.
Then the week before that she had a homeless guy that after he woke up from trauma, got up and dug into his bag of clothes and pulled out a bag of weed and was trying to light up a bowl right there in the hospital....security and the police had to be called...gotta love Elsinore.

03-28-2012, 02:43 PM
Tell Rich to hurry up and get out of there. I have questions that only he could probably answer!!! Seriously, we are thinking about you guys and hoping for the best!

I dunno if it's just me or what.... I can't find out what happened to Rich! Was this an accident or.... ?
Sorry 'bout that- we never did explain it clearly, did we?
The short version goes like this~
Dad went to the hospital on Monday with chest pains. The evidence points to a heart attack. While dealing with that some other complications arose. Thankfully we got him there before those had a chance to get any worse.

And thanks once again for all the well wishes.
Once I know he'll be able to read it-
I plan to print this thread and post it in his room.
He'll get a kick outta that...

StudeDave '57

03-29-2012, 03:31 PM
Sonny, dad had a bad heart attack.

To others that have asked- Don't worry-- SNW is a bit slowed for parts look up and tech questions but orders for in stock items are all going fine. We are open.

Mike & Dave,
I'm going to maybe step on some toes here but! SCREW the parts right now! Take care of your Dad. He is a LOT more important than anybodys parts that they need! Those parts and those orders will wait until Rich is well on the mend, and once that happens, YOUR stress level will also start to drop!

Do not worry about parts for anybody.

OK I said it, seriously, the parts will wait.

I don't get here as often as I should, sorry to here about Rich. I always appreciate his comments and advise, and look forward to his return. I hope all goes well for Rich, and as Jim T. said, forget the parts for now, take care of your dad. B.V.

03-29-2012, 10:06 PM
Jim {25Ragtop},
I think Rich will be fine. I am sure he has good nursing and medical care. Second thought is he is just too ornery and cantankerous to let something like a heart attack stop him...or is that me? I forget.

Someone mentioned early that Rich was one of the first people to welcome them here to the site. He was also one of the first to welcome me, then he helped me get in touch with a LONG time old mutual friend, Warren Webb, and then he was one of the first to help with some early issues with my truck. I still have things to do on my truck and need help at times...he can't go anywhere...he just wants a break and maybe a long nap....The last time I was in the hospital it was like a 3 day vacation...recliner bed, a TV clicker, and a good nap every hour or 2 when the Morphine drip kicked in...ahhh like a vacation.
Kepp getting well Rich and do it SOON.

03-30-2012, 01:03 AM

If this was a regular heart attack, dad would be out already. I am sorry to report he is still in ICU and may be there until next week.

Thank you all for prayers and encouragement. We do have to limit details to friends and family. Last report says he is OK for now, but it is about to get rough.

I have passed along specific details to many close friends, my inboxes are close to being overwhelmed from all the emails. I try to answer as many as (we) I can, Thanks for all of the kind words.

MIKE, DAVE, RON and family

03-30-2012, 10:34 AM
Thank you very much for keeping us up tp date Mike. All joking aside, I am still keeping you all in my prayers and thinking alot about all of you. Get Well Rich. No worries on the "details". That is just not important to the rest of us extended friends. Him getting better is all that is important right now.
Keep us up to date when you can on his condition. Make sure if he wakes up how much we all miss him.

03-30-2012, 03:20 PM
:pWell, in Richs's defense, has he ever been "regular" at anything?:p Hang in there guys and we will keep praying for you!! Brighter days ahead!!!

Pretty good day for dad, they got the heart steady and did get one machine removed. They started removal the other day, but it did not take. Now they can move on to the other things one at a time. He is alert when the let him wake up and no problems today like the last few days.

What a difference a day makes!!! I didn't know it when I typed that last update, but they took the breathing tube out early yesterday morning. Mike and I went to see Dad last night, and learned the news from the caregiver who was tending to him. We didn't get to actually see him, but that's a long boring story...

Today ought to be a better day, so I plan to go this afternoon.

Yes Clark, there is~ 7079 Dahlberg Rd.; Ferndale, WA 98248
Mike posted another one here as well. Between the two addies, we'll get it to Dad.

well- his was just a 'baby step' below requiring open heart what'ca call it, sooo...

HOT DAMN!! So, what's todays update??? Glad to hear of improvements everyday!! Jim
Sorry Jim, I posted this morning's update already. I post here after all the phone calls get answered and/or made. But this evening's update is here~

Mike and I made the trip not too long ago, and we got to see Dad this time. He is still trying to get outta there and get home!!! He has parts orders to fill, you see. We explained that they were being taken care of, and not to worry. This settled him down quite a bit. He's still way ahead of where the docs thought he could ever be by now considering where he was just a few days ago. I'm hopeful that tomorrow I can read this thread to him, and he will 'get' what it is that I'm reading...

I'll let you know how that plays out tomorrow.

Dave, we wanted to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you guys. So glad to hear that your dad is feeling better. We hope he has a speedy recovery! We know we're a little far away, but we're here if you need anything. Take care!

04-02-2012, 10:41 PM
I have to smile when I think of Rich as a Studebaker man...."Once a Studebaker man, ALWAYS a Studebaker man." He must realize the gravity of his situation ~~~ I mean didn't he come close to dying? And his long sleep...what was he dreaming about? Avanti's, Lark's, and lots of parts??
Well, if his health was compromised, his steady Studebaker Mind was apparantly not!! Good for him, Go Richard go!! But, please be careful with your health in the future; drink plenty of fluids and follow your doctors advice column. Maybe, for a while you'll let your 'boys' take care of the heavy lifting - i.e. getting the parts wrapped and sent out and you'll be regulated to writing answers on this here FORUM for so many of your friends...

My dad has tought me many 'studebaker things' He also tought me life, persuit of happiness, taxes and sometimes you gotta just grin and bare it....

The doctors said he had an x amount of survival rate which I will not go into details about, The truth did leave us scared, uncertiain and it was not a good week.

The odds that were given were something that would make you break down and cry. I did.

I and along with my close family are very greatfull we got him there in time and he had some of the best heart doctors known to the US of A.

The trauma he endured was massive, they say it kills (over ) 1 in four that encounter it. If not on the spot, most that have this kind of trauma die within a day or two.

I love all of you on the forum, please consider this when you eat too much sugar, fats and things disguised as good food.

When you guys and gals care enough to send even the most basic 'get well message' to my dad I just do not know what to say, I do hope I answered everyone. I got more emails and such than I can handle.

Last report, dad is having a hard time coming off of all the drugs, he is not acting normal, but the docs say this is NORMAL for patients that were heavy medicated. All vitals are good, heart is good, brain scan says he remembers more than we forgot about Stude sh;t and what fits what.

I saw dad today, he was rambling about an order to Brian , Avanti project #1,, and A lark I have in the shop. He asked how many sets of spark plugs, and tune up parts are in stock. I mentioned alot of people said hi, he sAID IT WAS A BIG CAR SHOW, HUH? He recalled the last orders we took and wanted to know if they went out. I told him SNW is all good, we will not let him down. No way that would happen.

He is still all about Studebaker, Back to normal as soon as god lets him.

Dad will have email print outs, forum print outs and such. A good read. He may actually post late, late next week. He also just got the new TW, so it may take awhile to answer!!!!!

We love you all and thank you, more than you know.

Mike Dave, Ron and family

Mike, thank you for the update on your dad. I do hope and pray he will continue with the improvement. Yeah, I know personally what you're going through. My dad was one of those who didn't make it back in '72. You and your dad are very lucky to have the advancements that have occured in the past few decades.

May our gracious Lord bless and uphold you, your family, and most of all your father.

04-03-2012, 02:32 AM
Give dad a few days for the body to clear the drugs out of itself. I recall when I was nursing that sometimes older folks were confused for a few days and then ok. best wishes for dad.

The measure of a man is the care and concern offered by those who value him, you just never know who they may be but it's been amply demonstrated here.

04-03-2012, 04:45 AM
Hey Mike, he mighten be rambling, he is thinking about that deal we have going with the 61 silver hawk, I hope he pulls through Ok, I am just kicking back here waiting for him to come good and I am sure he will and we can finish that deal.

To tell a big group of people you love them is a big deal. I for one truely appreciate that thought very much. I hope that you, your dad, and your whole family continue to feel the love from so many here on the website. Take my love and appreciation for all you guys do back to your pop.

ps: you comments brought a tear to my eye and I am not ashamed to admit it.

As stated by a few already, Rich was also one of the 1st to welcome me and point me in the right direction with the questions I had. A small gesture that quickly made me feel part of the Studebaker family!

Get well soon Richard I look forward to reading your advice again,

News can't get much better than you have posted after such a traumatic event. Sounds like your dad will be back with you and us and we are better for that.

I'm also impressed with the support group that his family provides.

Best wishes to all of you.

Thanks for keeping us all updated, guys. Made my day to read that Rich is pulling through and is on the road to be "normal" again. It's good to know that it looks like he'll be taking parts orders again before we know it. :)

04-03-2012, 10:16 PM
You know, People grieve in strange ways..... I never hold anything against anyone who has lost someone close.
People just aren't 'right' for a while.

Same goes for healing.
Some people just need to get back at it.
Being all concerned for their 'rest', or their 'healing' can sometimes be a hindrance to their self induced process.
Some people want the 'load' re-applied so they can feel 'normal' again.
Well, maybe applying a 'light load' will get them in the mood to keep on going.
Might be good to involve StudeRich in some Studetail work to occupy his mind and keep his emotional juices going.
That'll motivate him.
Glad to hear he's still kickin'!

04-03-2012, 10:20 PM
I too have been reading along, and am glad to here things are progressing in a positive direction.
Rich was also one of the first few to welcome me to the Forum, and has consistantly been one of the early responders to the many questions I have had since joining just over 2 years ago.
Thanks for that Rich.
And can't wait for you to get out of ICU so you can have a laptop by your side.

I had a chance to spent quite a bit of time with Dad today. He was pretty happy, as he has been able to start eatting 'real' (semi-solid) food!!! He's also liking his new 'room with a view' even moreso then his last one. This new one is one floor higher, and faces towards the North where he lives. So all in all- he's taking steps in the 'right' direction~ for sure. Thanks once again for the thoughts and prayers- he's ichin' to get outta there, and back to life as he knew it...

I regret that I have been away from the Forum for several months. In checking on another Studebaker friend tonight, I came across the story of the battle StudeRich and family have waged for the past several weeks. I simply want to add my admiration for the fight the family has carried for their husband, father and grandfather through this crisis. God bless you all and I pray for a smooth recovery so StudeRich can get back to those folks and activities that is life for him. Never give up!!

I havent posted regularly here but have been checking daily on your dad's condition. I think back years ago when I first learned of your grandfather, his Stude's & interests. Thanks & keep us informed with the updates! Warren & Joy Webb

04-09-2012, 11:40 AM
Thanks once again to all who have replied to this thread, and those who have been pulling for him, and/or took the time to send cards. Dad has seen about 1/4 of these posts so far, but got too choked up to read much more yesterday. He's walking fairly well, and talking even better, too.

I'm almost thinking that I ought to wait to post this, but the news is just too good not to...

It looks like Dad will be leaving the hospital sometime in the next few days!!! The staff is still very impressed with his recovery, and though sad to see him go, they are very excited to see it happen. He will get to spend a bit of time in a 'rehab' center in order to regain more of his strength, but leaving the hospital is never a bad thing considering what he went through just two weeks ago.

I'll keep the updates coming as they happen.

I saw dad today, I was happy to see him out of the hospital and into the Physical Therapy Center. On the way in I saw long time Russ and Hazel of Whatcom County SDC!! What a small world- when they were done with some PT training we all had a nice visit.

Dad says "hi' and no need to break him out of there, he'd rather WALK out, thank you.

04-10-2012, 12:07 PM
This is such good news about your father. I am an older Studebaker nut who has a lot of medical problems, but your father is a miracle!! Its God's gift fo him and to your family. To be able to beat those odds is
saying something for inner strength of Rich. It will probably be a lengthy recuperation, but stay positive, Rich. The Studebaker family needs you, your services, and your family. We'll continue to feel whole as long as you improve.

04-10-2012, 08:35 PM
HI GUYS AND GALS! You will never know how much your PRAYERS have meant to my recovery, the Big Guy up there does not need for me to read them even though I have, to perform his Miracles. I was recesitated TWICE in the St. Joseph Hospital ER Room back on Wed. March 26 or 27 (it could have been past Midnight) and I understand that most people having been though that either do not come back, or they do with very limited memory left. I do seem to be about 90% or more and improving.

I do not know much about what happened, except that I was out for many days, maybe I had so little to lose, that there was limited loss! :D ;)

Now please do not expect a lot of answers to your replys here, because they are keeping me very busy with "E-Vals" half of yesterday and all of today. Also I have limited excess to this "shared "Floor" Computer.
I think Studedave57 may have a good understanding of "E-Vals" for a different purpose, (USN).:D

Anyway I have seen every kind of "Theripest" in the World, and tomorrow they all have a Meeting with my family to offer their "suggestions" for my future extended care, improvement and survival.

I really do appreciate all of your Thoughts and Prayers, thank you very much.
I also need to thank my three Sons; Ron Dave and Mike for all of their help and support, now and in the future.

It's good to see you back, Sir!

Savor every day of being waited on hand and foot that you can, 'cuz pretty soon it'll be over and you'll kind of miss it. I know I did after I broke my back last year and finally had to leave the hospital.

Listen to your doctors; they know what they're talking about or you wouldn't still be with us.

Now, if you need some help with your physical therapy and you'd like me to recruit a couple of fit young ladies, who do pole dancing on the side, to assist you with that and sneak them into the hospital........? :)

Ditto that Dave!

I am now recovering at my Son Ron's in the Fairhaven Area of South Bellingham after a week in the Saint Joseph Rehab center in Bellingham.

The St. Joe's Hospital and Rehab is one of the best in the Country and the Cardiology Dept. may be the best in the Country, I am so fortunate for all of their help. They did not just release me and forget me, I am doing outpatient rehab also, just great!

As Dave said we do appreciate all of your prayers and well wishes, and I am slowly coming back after quite a bit of trauma.

Thanks all, Rich. :) :)

If your doctor won't allow you to sample any, I'm sure Dave and Mike will be be able to help you out with them!

We have the Lincoln Club doing a mystery tour Sunday, with the final destination being a Studebaker Museum in Bellingham.
Dave, let me know if you think you can make it and get some more people educated and excited about Studebaker's.
Next weekend a young movie producer will be filming some University actors, singers and models in the Diner. One looks just like Marilyn Monroe (you might want to check them out).

Rich, send me the phone number for Ron's if you don't have your cell phone and I'll give a call tomorrow.

To: StudeRich,----Just wondered how You're feeling?

05-02-2012, 05:25 PM
Hi Ed, not much can keep an old Studebaker survivor and SDC member since 1968 down!

Thanks very much for asking, I have not been on here much lately, the Rehab people at the Hospital keep me being shuttled every day down there, it's a good thing it's only 2 miles from my Son Ron's house where I am staying in South Bellingham. Rich: Sure am glad to see you posting. Our prayers are still ongoing for your full recovery. I beat you by a year, joined the SDC in 67. Sure is a long time ago.

Echo that, Rich - it's good to see you posting, even if it's not regular yet. We were praying a lot for you!

Not everyone has posted their thoughts on here perhaps but, 7,093 have looked in to see how Rich was doing. Phenomenal! Amazing! What a kind and thoughtful boost for his family to know there are sooooo many of you who care about this particular two legged Encyclopedia of Studebaker knowledge. My greatful thanks to the oustanding team at the hospital as well for making this a continuing saga.

Why is this man's grin so big?

Well, because he's happy to be alive of course!!! :!:
(then again- he may have thought I was gonna let him drive)

That picture was taken five weeks and six days after Dad survived 'the event' which changed our lives. Now do you see why we were so happy to have had all the well wishes? Once again...
