50 starlight brake shoe question

  • Brakes: 50 starlight brake shoe question

    can anybody tell me what the 5/8" rod in the front brake shoe is? it sticks through the lining, an clips
    to the shoe. is it a wear indicator?looks like it might be aluminum or some sort of pot metal

    It's part of the self adjusting mechanism. A wondrous design that works best when kept scrupulously clean.

      yes its a selft adjusting tip. Too bad these early brakes weren't self energizing. The maint manual states to replace these tips with every new set of brake shoes.
