  • amazing the car ran

I get a 'F-' for my work yesterday. Car was slow to start after I had plug wires and distributor cap off. Once it started it missed big time. I found #4,#6, & #8 plug wires off. I corrected that . Again it was slow to start but ran smooth in the shop. I drove to the gas station and load caused a miss. Upon checking I found the distributor cap secure and rotated about one plug counter clock wise.[xx(] I runs great ,now.
Anyone else want to confess a boo boo?

Don't be so rough on yourself. I wouldn't give you worse than a D+, most probably a C-, unless of course you're a professional mechanic.

Sounds a lot like something I'd do, actually...[:I]

Yeah, don't beat yourself up too much curt. We all have them moments where we say "Thats gonna be the highlight on the blooper reel" [)]. I have quite a few myself. I think the most recent one started with adjusting the valves. This led to a couple of plugs fouling on one side of the engine, as I adjusted them the fun way. This led to two cylinders missing as the oil from the valve covers dribbled into the plug threads and around the tips of the plugs. Alright, pull plugs, clean them, gap them, no biggie. Well I must have got a little exhuberant on one of the plugs as I cracked the porcelain on the rearmost plug, which led to the wire separating with the connector still in the wire clip. This of course led to only 7 of the 8 cylinders firing(major miss) and the breaking of the porcelain occurring not in the driveway, but on the way to school. This eventually gave way to wrapping the wire up in a safe spot at school, driving from school with 7 cylinders firing and finding a replacement plug and pulling the old one. [)]

I believe my biggest occurred with a Ch**y, as opposed to a Stude and my apologies for "entering it" in the "contest". But it is almost too funny to pass up. I had just dropped the distributor back in on a rebuild and placed the rotor in postion and lacking a handy screw driver to tighten down the screws I figured I'd do that later before installing the cap. Only thing is when later came I had forgotten that the screws were still loose. Durn thing ran fine until about 3000 rpm and a mile from home when the rotor lifted up off the shaft as far as it could go and sorta busted things up a little inside the cap. Needless to say it refused to run at that point. That's a D- in my book.

On the way home with the wagon after buying it.. i noticed it started missing a lot and would shut down in traffic. I thought it was vapor lock so I added an electric pump to the car..It still had the miss. I kept thinking it was vapor lock so then put f/i rubber hose around the line from the pump to the carb.. Once again..did it again... Went out later that evening and fired up the car.. it was kinda dark...and saw a spark coming out of the bottom bottom plug wire. It was barely in the cap and was shorting.... put the wire back in and the car ran fine..

On a Grand Wag I owned once (actually it owned me), I replaced a bad solenoid and got a couple of wires reversed. When I went to start it up, the starter drive wouldn't disengage. Shutting off the ignition switch had no effect, since the starter was energized, and the engine kept running on compression! I finally yanked the wires off the solenoid but by then it was too late and I'd burned up the starter.
