I need a new battery for my 1963
Avanti. This is the long stye, 4 1/2" X 19 3/8" X 8" The battery in the car has Willard thin plastic lettering applied to the case. Should it be a Willard battery and is it available with the script cast into the case? What is the best source for this item. Floyd Jaehnert

Should be the repro Willard if you need the one point in judging and you have the other 399 in hand.:) If not just buy a 3EE from
a decent battery join. (Used in many Fork lifts)

Usually any good tractor supply stocks the 3EE battery. If you want to get fancy you can gut your 3EE battery and drape the empty case over a compact PC680 Odyssey dry cell (and have a lot of space left!).

Had to get a battery, 3EE, for my 63 Avanti a few weeks ago. Kanter in Boontn NJ wanted $139 for no script & $239 with script.. Went to an interstate battery distributor. Paid 79 - 12 for the core = $67..Purchased a Studebaker battery label from Stu Int for around $3 and stuck it on top...Could get a Willard label for about the same & slap it on the side..

For what it's worth, I purchased a Willard battery from them after I finished the mechanical resto on my Avanti.......in less than six months it went into the trash.....would not hold a charge and it just would not crank the car as a battery should....the owner is a fellow named Dave Lane I think.....would not give any money back..very hard nosed.....went out and purchased an Interstate Megatron.......spins that engine like a top!!

If you arent too concerned with being original, I used a Honda battery
which was about 1/4 the price of the tractor one. It also has more
cold cranking, and more reserve. It takes up half the tray, and has
to safe at least half the weight. Sorry I am at work and can not see
the group size in my picture :

Its a Group Size 51, and says 51G on the battery. Its not a "Honda"
battery, just used mostly on Hondas - I dont know what models.

Cranking amps are 530
Cold cranking amps are 435

Fits the Avantis that use the long skinny battery.

common truck, tractor, equipment battery, 3EE. Any decent battery place, auto parts shop (rural areas), and truck/tractor dealer can get it for you. Willard is still made and you can still get it ordered in locally.

Only the 63's used the 3EE, if you have a 64, it uses the group 24.
