  • 1962 Indy pace car (Daytona convertible). What cost when new?

Are you up to a little quiz? I just made up a window price sticker for the 1962 Daytona convertible that paced the Indy 500 that year. I used a copy of the original production order to get all of the correct options/accessories etc. Of course this would not include prices for any of the special testing done in the engineering dept. Just the base cost of the car with accessories had it been ordered by a customer and picked up at the factory.

    Below your five choices:

    A.) $3445.66
    B.) $3222.18
    C.) $3886.16
    D.) $4012.56
    E.) $3616.09

I will post a copy of the wps Sunday (1-5-12) evening.

I like Mark's answer, but I'll say D.) $4012.56 just to be different.
As for the pace car, Chuck Donkle of Colorado is restoring one of the originals built.

Since this is a pacecar thread and will be short lived once the price is revealed; Could we see some cool pictures??? (color please )

My guess is the highest price, pace cars always brought good money, and this one had a few options......

Wa sthat a taxi steering gear?

Now exactly where did you find the factory-installed-on-the-production-line price for the 1551386 Steering Gear, Dick?

'Not questioning the legitimacy because both of the duplicate, actual, Pace Cars were indeed so equipped, 'just inquiring about how one would come up with a price for it as a "regular" production option, even ultra-super-special-ordered. BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

Just wondered what the 1551386 steering gear was (or is) exactly?

Bob; My guess is that it was a "no charge" item inasmuch as it was a stock item and the car could not leave the factory without a steering gear! Same is true for the 3.54 rear axle.

A 1551386 was nothing at all special - the 20:1 ratio steering gear used on ALL Lark body styles 1961 and up with or without power steering - EXCEPT for convertibles without power steering, which would have used 24:1 ratio steering box. However, this car, a convertible without power steering, yet being supplied for a high speed application, was equipped with the very standard 20:1 ratio steering box. After 1963, the sliding roof wagons without power steering also used the 24:1 steering box.

I have a couple pictures of the Pace Car. Not sure they are the official car(s), but they are pictures.

Nice Pics. Obviously the first one has to be the real deal with Sherwood Egbert riding in back.

The Second Car with the rear fender Stone Guards is most likely a recent Restoration of the real Car, one of the factory built clone cars, or just a '62 Convertible.

Front seat, Tony Hulman (owner Indianapolis 500 track) Back seat: Sherwood Egbert (President of Studebaker). Not the actual pace car but one used for publicity.
