I covered 4,771 miles on my trip to South Bend. Used 311.05 gallons of gas at a cost of $968.41. That's an average cost per gallon of $3.11 and an average MPG of 15.34.
I thought I'd get worse mileage going home (mostly uphill...against the prevailing winds), but actually got better. I cruised generally at 65 MPH.
The truck is an '01 GMC Sierra, short bed, regular cab. 4.3 liter V6 (200 HP @ 4,600 rpm; 260 ft lb @ 2,800 rpm), 4L60E auto. I was always in tow/haul mode with the trans. Total weight of the car trailer with the car is about 5,500 pounds.
It did slow down on the mountain passes, but only once below 50 MPH.
The truck came originally with 255 70 16 tires. I've upgraded to 265 70 16's. I didn't recalibrate the speedometer, but I believe the error is negligible. If anything, I actually covered more miles at a higher rate of speed than indicated.
