  • Transmission / Overdrive: Shift Indicator Question

It seems like every Studebaker I've owned with an column shift automatic transmission has had a fair amount of play in the shift indicator on the steering column.

I replaced the rubber shift grommets, but there is still a lot of play.

Is there something that can be done to make this better?

The business end of the shift lever fits in to a detent in the selector tubular shaft. Over time the detent wears. If your shifter is working I don't think it would be worth taking this all apart to eliminate play. If you ever have it apart for some other reason, I have added some weld and ground the detent to make the shifter snug. It is way too easy to make it too snug.
