Hi:
Understand most of you are at the National Gathering in South Bend but I need some help. My firm has been retained to appraise a pair of Studebaker Hawk coupes. Our client is a life-long Studey enthusiast who has donated cars to the Museum in South Bend. As part of that assignment I'd like to decode their Serial and Engine Numbers. Here's the info:

BTW ... Both the Door Tag & Cowl Tag numbers agree

Car "A" - 1962 Hawk GT Coupe - Serial: 62V12024
- Engine: P82357

Car "B" - 1964 Hawk GT Coupe - Serial: 64V8222
- Engine: PJ 324

Can anyone help? Thanks.

I have a 64 GT ( 64V2488) built in August 63, with an engine assembly, very close (PH323) to the car assembly date (from the build sheet)

Your vehicle number 64V8222 was built well after mine, but then, they only had 3 months or so, before they shut down production.

The 64 GT Engine number indicates
P- 289 Cubic inch
J - Assembled in September
3 - 1963
24 - day of month

The build sheet for the car, shows the dates the assembly started and was completed, where the cars was shipped and the options included.
You can request a build sheet from the museum, as they have all the records for cars back into the 40's I believe it costs around $40.00 for the data. ....

I'll chime in with as much as I can and let others fill in the rest, so here goes:

Firstly, according to Studebaker's model identification chart, they called 1962, 1963 and 1964 Hawks..."2 Dr. Hardtop" ...NOT Coupes.
The numbers on the "Body" model/number tag (located under the hood on the Passenger side of the cowl) and the "Vehicle" serial plate (located on the drivers side A-pillar) should NOT agree...they were used for two different purposes.

By decoding the "Vehicle serial number" of that '64 Hawk, it was the 7,222nd "1964 model year Studebaker vehicle" to come off the assembly line at the South Bend, IN Plant.

The ENGINE serial number for the '64 Hawk indicates it is an 8 cyl., 289 cu.in. and was "built" Tuesday, September 24, 1963.

1962 had a different numbering scheme. All I can tell you, is that the first 62 Hawk, came off the line as 62V1001 and the first 62 engine used, was P79,801. The "P" still indicates a 289, but the number issued was where it was since they built 289's.

Hi,

I have a 64 hawk serial no 64V7181 and the engine no is 93VJ320
Yes this is an 259 engine, becouse this is one of the 59 export models equipped with the V8 engine.
Can someone tell me to who i can mail for the buid/export sheet?
