  • Truly Studebaker Drivers

At our Potomac Chapter Holiday Party this past Sunday we had an astounding (for us in the winter) number of Studebakers driven to the party- 13. See http://www.studebaker-info.org/photo.../psdc1211.html for pictures of the cars including Torrey Kirby's diesel Lark and Paul Thrush's '48 Commanderanger (a '48 Commander 4-door on Ford Ranger running gear).

Looks like a beautiful (although probably cold) day there in West Virginia so, why not bring out the classics? (Cars as well !) Plus there was FOOD!!
From the pictures........sure looks like a very nice event!

Looks like a Good Time was had by all, thanks for posting those nice Pics. That certainly IS a Great turnout and very sharp Cars by the way!

That is a very rare and nice Black '63 Lark Standard with Diesel Power. They all look great, except that uglier than ugly Goldish Green Box thing next to the Gray Wagonaire.

Doesn't the Guy about to get into his Beautiful Custom repainted Blue Metallic '62 Lark Wagon somewhat resemble George W. Bush?

The George W. Bush look-a-like is Larry Pugh, long time SDCer and owner of many Larks, something like ten 62s alone (all in buildings). This particular car came from a GSA auction back in the 70s. The winning bidder thought he was buying one '62 wagon when in fact it was for a lot of five (I believe). Larry got this one, but I don't know what happened to the others. It and all the others were GSA gray with a plywood floor instead of a rear seat, 259 V-8 with three-speed stick. The wagon is a movie star having been used in several with drivers including Brad Pitt. Larry has to ride with them to teach them how to drive a stick shift.
Yes, that box is truly ugly. Too bad it was sitting that close to the nice wagon.
The party was held at The Inn at Charles Town, a very nice hotel on the grounds of the Hollywood Casino at the Charles Town Races in Charles Town, WV. They make us a very good deal- nice large room, no charge, audio-video equipment, no charge, cash bar- no charge, nice buffet beautifully presented- we do pay for that. Of course they hope we will ride their shuttle (every 15 minutes) to the casino and drop some money in a few of the 5,000 slots or sit in a few of the table games.

Paul got the history of Larry Pugh’s 62 wagon about 99% right. Although it was purchased at a GSA auction, the original owner was the Department of Interior, and it was painted Park Service green. It was repainted after a movie company damaged the paint on the hood during the filming of a made-for-TV movie about the Kennedys. Most of the Kennedys had large families, and in the 1960s, they mostly drove large American station wagons (Chryslers or Buicks) – but none of those could be found in the DC area for several critical shots on the streets of the Georgetown section of DC. In fact, the only 1962 station wagon that was available was Larry’s Park Service green Studebaker. So that was what the actor that played Bobby Kennedy got to drive in the movie. Movie cameras shooting though car windshields are mounted on a dolly attached to the hood with big suction cups, and the car pushes it along the street. When they removed the suction cups, the USPS green paint came off with them. The movie company was supposed to repaint the whole car the correct, original color, but apparently thought any old green was good enough. So now it’s a sort of a blue-green.
