View Full Version : Avanti Transmission Fluid

Well, switched from the brakes to finishing putting the engine back together on the Avanti. Was sitting apart since last March. Had to jump start it, 3 cranks and it started right up, with the gas I left in. Gotta love these Studebakers. Now the question, I need to add trans fluid to replace what leaked out. Whats the proper type to use for the Avanti ?????

Dextron or Type F. Type F gives a stiffer shift.

No such thing as "Dextron" trans. fluid!!

Dexron is what GM uses, Type "F" is what Ford uses...and I really don't know what Chrysler uses!!

Type "F" will give a "slightly" better shift feel in a good trans. A worn trans., you won't feel anything different.
If it's been sitting/has a lot of miles on it...might be time to clean the filter, pan and freshen "all" the fluid....drain and replace with Type "F" before you hit the road.

Actually found Dexron III on shelf & Type F..Type F states for older Ford vehicles..Dexron states for GM & Ford using Dexron Fluid. Wouldn't the Studebaker trans be more similiar to the GM than Ford brands anyway ???? And as John stated in his response, wouldn't the Type F give a stiffer shift & the GM Dexron smoother ????

The man who sold me my car "thew in" a bottle of trans fluid.
It's Valvoline (Sp?) Dextron III, so that's what I've been using. They have it at NAPA, haven't seen it anywhere else (but then, I haven't looked too hard).

Actually the Studebaker transmission is a very close cousin to the Ford-O-Matic/Cruiseamatic, many parts are exactly the same.

I've read about the Studebaker engine foundry in South Bend and know that closed up a bit after the rest of the plant. Also that Studebaker switched to GM engines which I beleive were double the cost. Where did they get their transmissions from b4 and after they closed up South Bend ??

I don't think the cost of the GM engines was double the cost of internally produced ones for Studebaker...but they may have cost more. GM wasn't about to pass up a chance to put a competitor out of business [xx(].

I believe Studebaker sourced ALL their transmissions (manual and automatic) from Borg Warner...at least from the 40's on...both before and after they closed South Bend.

I believe all their rear ends were always from Dana Spicer.

They may have produced their own very early on...like the combination rear end/transmission they used in the teens.

A quick question on the transmission topic. Would the automatic in my 66 Avanti be a Borg/Warner? Its a 2nd gear start type. I assume it would also use the type F fluid? Thanks,

ALL Studebaker automatics were Borg-Warner. The early Detroit Gear DG-xxx transmissions were unique to Studebaker (but later used in some other cars, like Jaguar) and the Flightomatics and Powershifts used from 1956-on were variations of the Borg-Warner Model 8, also known as Flash-O-Matic (AMC) Ford-O-Matic (um, Ford) etc.

At the time when Studebaker switched to Canadian production using the McKinnon Industries GM 283 V8, GM only had the Power Glide 2 speed auto trans. Studebaker preferred to continue with the Ford type CruiseOMatic 3 speed Borg Warner auto trans. The problem became how to mate the "Ford" transmission to the "GM" cylinder block. Answer was to use a Checker Taxi Cab bellhouse casting. Checker had been using GM engines and Borg Warner trans combos for the reason of economy and performance of the 3 speed trans. Stude8

Regarding the Chrysler automatic trannies, I dunno about the tranny fluid then, but I see they have a fluid on store shelves that has ATF+4 in its moniker. I have some of ATF+4 I bought and started using but was advised to stop as I don't know whats in it, so I use the Dexron III Mercon fluid. I regularly use Dexron III Mercon for the Powershift auto. In the case of trannies, I just try to stick to what is prescribed for the tranny, and keep the mixing business out of that end as much as possible. And no, I'm not dropping a pan to remove the Chrysler fluid, if thats not broke, I don't need to go and fix it!! {:)]
I should also note Studebaker's Borg Warner 3 spd wasnt limited to Studebaker. At least one variation or another of that transmission was in most makes and models from Acura to Zimmerman. It was a pretty stout little bugger to kill.

We just had a trans expert at our chapter meeting last night - he was involved with the development of this trans! And I asked just that question: What type of fluid? He said either one, but that Type F would give a firmer shift, and would cause no additional wear on the trans.

He also said not to mix them, so if you're not sure what was in there to begin with, I'd flush it before I added something new.

I appreciate all of you for your suggestions. I threw in a quart of Dexron III for now. I'm still piecing the car together. Have to get it to a body shop to get the rear pipe removed & a new bracket/pipe rewelded onto it. I will drop the trans pan and put in a new filter and add DexronIII to it....

This may have been true on the cars, but the larger trucks offered Timken, Eaton and Rockwell rear axles.
