  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: clicky speedo 62 HAWK

To night my speedometer was making a loud noise. I removed it from the back of the speedometer and when i tried to remove it from the tranny (i want to lub it) it did not want to pull out of tranny. Is there a lock ring or something holding the cable in besides the nut on the end of the cabel. thanks for the help. I also need a round or square canister of some sort to make my tack work any suggestions on repair or a replacement tack that looks like the remaing gauges, my temp gauge does not work and I can not find a replacement with the side mount electrical sensor connector. Do I have to access water galley at back of head?? Ampers gauge works sometims. 3 wires on ambers gauge 2 from ignition to gauge (yellow at 3 oclock) to gauge (1 black at 9 oclock ) this one appears to go to volt regulator thanks again

    1. Reach under the dash, unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo, and pull the cable out. Get a paper water cup(V shaped) and fill half way with lube, feed the cable thru the water cup, and back into the sheath, all in one move, to eliminate the mess. This should do it.
    2. Replacement tach sending units are available from our vendors. It is usually the sending unit that goes out, not the head unit.
    3. Temp gauge sending unit is available from our vendors. It screws into the back of the drivers side cylinder head. Should be an orange, or red(I forget) wire from it to the gauge. The gauges, if defective are getting hard to find. You need to get a manual from our vendors, available as a book or cd, to get wiring schematics.
    4. All electricity goes thru the amp-meter. If it is intermitent, it might be the voltage regulator, or the brushes in the generator. Hope this helps.

Thanks it does, I already have the cable removed from the back of the speedo. I like the cup idea too.
If I replace the ampers gauge with a voltage gauge what wires will need to be connected together to keep electricity flowing. Unfortunately for me someone did some work on the wiring harness and it does not look stock any more. Many wires are yellow and attached with wire crimps. I am going to try and remove the wiring harness from my parts hawks and replace whats in my driver. Thanks again

Studebaker vendors will have a temperature sending unit for your application and it should not be a problem to remove or replace it. It is at located at the top of the drivers side head.

If your Hawk is a 1962 you need a rectangular sending unit. The round sending units are for R-series redline tachometers. I have a good rectangular unit (Guaranteed to Work) recently removed. Private Message me if your interested
