Hello all.

I have two starlite coupes, a 50 and a 52. The 50 is really a parts car so I'd like to put its entire front bodywork on the 52 frame/car. it looks as though it will work, any feedback would be very welcome on issues around doing this.

thx

If the '50 is a Champion, not a Commander, I'm thinking you may be able to use the hood, front grill panel and outer fenders. Inner fenders will not fit the '52. Having no personal experience with the swap, I acquiesce to others.

No expert here, but as I understand there is quite a difference between the '50's and '51's thanks to many engineering changes. Might have something to do with the introduction of the V8 in '51.

This isn't to say it's impossible - but I'd expect a lot of frustration in the process.

Yeah, there's a problem. If you had a '51 Bullet nose, the switch would be a "cake walk". Not so with the '50 metal. The 50's had a different wheelbase and so the wheel housings (cutouts) would be placed wrong on the '52. Obviously and grossly wrong.[V] Sorry!

Poor 52s. They are the Rodney Dangerfields of Studebakers. They don't get no respect. :(

I was thinking of putting a 51 front clip on my 52 also, since I have all the parts, but I decided to keep it as a 52.

Thanks all, so it sounds as though the parts interchange will work better backwards - ie putting the 52 doors on the 50 (whose doors are rotted out), trunk lid etc.
I measured the wheelbases tonight (a tight squeeze on the 52 which is packed in tight in my shop). It appears the 52 has a longer wheelbase by 2 inches, is this correct?

thanks!

Yes, the 50 Champion wheelbase is 113 inches and the 51&52 Champion and Commander (except Land Cruiser) wheelbase is 115 inches.

Thanks all. Anyone know if the extra two inches was added under the body or at the front suspension in 52? The front clip appears to be identical in length...

Oliver, the wheel opening in the front fenders is more rearward.

Don Gay in Lowpoint, Il. did this swap for a customer some years back. He might remember some of what he had to do.

thanks Milt. Any contact info for Don Gay or do I need to search for him?
