Hello:

My firm <www.autovaluz.com> has been retained to appraise a pair of Studebaker Hawk GT's for an estate. One is a 62, the other a 64. Whereat may I decode the Serial Numbers?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Jon, if you post the numbers here, our guys will be happy to help. There are three sets of numbers you'll need:

The Body Tag number. This is a stamped metal plate affixed to the firewall underneath the hood, typically on the passenger's side, and will contain 2 rows of information, similar to

--------
62V-K
2049
--------

You'll also need the Serial number, which is on a steel plate affixed to the driver's door post, and the Engine number, which is stamped (not cast) on a machined pad at the driver's side front of the engine block.

If you post these, we can decode them easily.

...but keep in mind, there isn't much "decoding". You'll learn approximately where in the production year the car was assembled and if it was South Bend or Hamilton made. If you want to know the assembly date, the serial number of the original engine, the equipment it was built with, etc. you'll need to get the original production order from the Studebaker National Museum.

If you need some help on appraisal, I'm adviser for Studebaker values for NADA and have been retained as a "expert witness" in court cases for whatever that's worth. GT Hawks are pretty much my best area having bought and sold over 100. Just e-mail me pics and descriptions if you need help.

APPRAIZR - just a reminder, if the estate is going to sell these, this forum reaches most of the Studebaker enthusiasts in the nation, as well as many overseas. This forum would be the first place to offer them.

NADA lists a '53 Commander Regal Starliner at $18,000 and a '55 Commander Regal Starliner at $26,400. Is that really where the market is JP?

Ed Elillis's condition 2, low mileage, 53 Commander Starlight was bid to $39,000 at Atlantic City in Feb did not make his reserve, so the NADA values will be adjusted up shortly.
