  • Engine: R2 Water Pump and Alternator

What is the difference between an R2 Vs. regular 289 water pump and will R1 alternator brackets work for mounting an alternator on an R2? Ken, Deltaville, Va

The water pump has a heavier bearing (I believe) plus reinforcing ribs around the snout. A standard V8 water pump will fit but won't last.

R1's and R2's used the same alternator brackets as well as the alternator itself.

The housing around the bearing is larger on all Avanti water pumps. the load of the supercharger, the clutch fan, and the heavy cast iron pulleys will often break the thinner standard pump if one tries to use one. The water pump manifold is also different on Avantis.
The alternator bracket on the R2 is built into the supercharger bracket. The R1 alternator bracket is entirely different. If the R1 has air conditioning, it is mounted in the same location as an R2, but with a bracket off of the AC compressor bracket. An Avanti without AC, the alternator tucks down lower on the right side of the engine. They all use the same Prestolite ALE alternator.

That is correct, all except the R2 GT Hawks, they use the single adjustment boss housing (35 Amp.) standard Prestolite Alternator.

Thanks to all for reply, that's what I was looking for. I'm restoring an R2 Avanti back to its original status having bought an R2 motor and could not get the alternator from an R1 to mount correctly and the supercharger pulleys are not aligning. Have several old 289 water pumps and was wonderig if they would be ok as far as alignment, pending much larger order to SI for all parts needed. In the meantine, any idea who might have the correct alternator brackets? Ken, Deltaville, Va

If you have an Avanti R2, then the supercharger bracket IS the alternator mounting bracket.
You will need the adjusting arm that blots to the thermostat housing/surge tank. SI has them.
