A two-story garage burst into flames late Sunday night off Idaho-Maryland Road, completely incinerating three classic automobiles.

“It exploded,” said neighbor Sarah Hendrickson, whose house sits across from the structure in the 11000 block of Icon Way. “It went as tall as the oak trees.”

Hendrickson had just gone to bed at 10:30 p.m. when she heard a “snap, crackle, pop” accompanied by the growling of her dog, she said.

She went to check just as the garage “went straight up” within less than a minute, she said.

Six engines, two water tenders and a battalion chief responded to the scene to find the garage fully involved, according to a report from Nevada County Consolidated Fire Battalion Chief Tom Browning. Personnel also responded from Grass Valley, Nevada City Ophir Hill and Calfire; 23 firefighters worked for more than three hours to extinguish the blaze and keep it from spreading to the nearby residences.

“It was so hot, it was warm even in our house,” Hendrickson said.

The intense blaze was fueled by the three perfectly restored vehicles in the garage —
    a 1932 Studebaker roadster, a 1939 Chevrolet coupe and a 1931 Model A four-door, said neighbor John Klein.

The cars had belonged to Ivan Kuster, who had been actively involved in antique car clubs in Sacramento and Nevada County before his death in December 2009, including the local chapter of the Model A Ford Club, the GraNevaAs.

“That was his hobby,” Klein said of the blackened hulks now resting behind Kuster's former residence. “It's a shame.”

    How sad.
Wasn't that picture last year or so of the burned early post-war Commander/President, also in CA?
If so CA is getting to be a rough place to garage a Studebaker.
