  • Electrical: Coil 1948 Studebaker Commander

I had to replace the coil in my 1948 Studebaker Commander. I ordered a new one from Studebaker International. When the new one came, the marks by the two wire-hookup nuts were Pos.+ and Neg. -.

The marks on the original coil were Dist. and Batt. Does anybody know how the new coil should be wired?

On your positive ground system the positive side would go to the distributor and negative would be the wire from the ignition switch.

Connect the negative side of the coil to the lead from the ignition switch, the positive terminal goes to the distributor lead. Bud

Thank you, Bud. I don't even know what would have happened if I had wired the coil incorrectly.

For some reason, the points burn up eventually if the coil is in backwards .
