View Full Version : Has anyone put dual exhaust on a 51-52 Stude

I am going to have a muffler shop put dual exhaust on my 52 Commander. I wanted the pipes to come out where the original cut out is in the bumper pan. I cut another opening on the left side for the other tail pipe. When I put the pan back on, it looks like the gas tank is in the way. I can leave off the pan, but it still looks like it will be hard to make the pipes symmetrical.

Has anyone done this, and if so, how did you do it?

I looked at pictures of Ted Harbit's Chicken Hawk, but I don't see any tail pipes coming out the back

Here are some pictures. I lightened them so you can see the undercarriage.

I had a 52 in the 50's and it had duals so it is possible Leonard, the muffler shop will deal with it. My memory don't quite go that far back so I cant say how it was done;)

Side pipes, Leonard! Go for it!!!

One of our chapter members has duals on his '54.
I zoomed the original, and his pipes are both below the pan.

However, if you look at the OE pipes for your Daytona, you will see that they go over the axle and run horizontal, fairly low. Then they kick upward at an angle, about 12" from the end (about 2" before the hanger tab). Then there is the downward "hook" at the end. I would think that a similar sequence of bends would allow the pipe to clear the tank and still exit through the mouse hole.

This muffler shop was recommended to me by a guy in our club and I have talked to the guy there, but as I looked around the shop, everyone was under 30 and they had lots of "coffee can" extensions hanging on the wall, so I don't think I would trust their judgment!;) I don't want a huge "coffee can" coming out of my car like I see on Hondas!

I will discuss the options with the guy when I take it over there next week. They had just finished doing a 34 Ford.

Thanks Jim for your help.

I had the muffler shop run duals back into a "water heater" muffler, duals in, a single pipe out, Probably has back pressure, but, 2/3 rds of the way it is a dual.
