I have a 1955 E5-12 (1/2 ton), and the number that the state of California (where I bought it) calls the VIN is the engine number, stamped on the block at the upper left front, on the left side. There also is Studebaker's serial number, located on the plate on the drivers side, just below the seat.

In the '50s, many/most states used the engine number, rather than the serial number for a VIN (vehicle identification number). If the number matches your engine number, you are in luck. If the engine has been changed, buy the build sheet from the Studebaker National Museum. The build sheet will show the correlation between the original engine number and the serial number.
