  • Engine: Head Numbers

I am trying to figure out what kind of heads that I have on my 62 289. The casting numbers are kinda hard to read, but look like 1667670. Does this sound correct? Thoughts?

Take a look at this link: http://www.studebaker-info.org/Headcasting.html and maybe you will figure out what you have. There is a 1557570 on the list.

Dare I say...you most likely have cast iron Studebaker heads on your 289. I know of none others that fit...and I (some of us) have looked..!

        Just answering your question....!

Mike, I have a bad (cracked) head, and I was just trying to to identify the heads. The casting numbers are very faint. Hopefully, I can get this all going pretty so

The 570 heads are among the most common and you shouldn't have any problems finding another.

While you've got them apart, have new guides, positive seals and a good valve job done.

After fifty years of patching them up, I now mill the head, use new valves and the springs as well. No, it's not the CASO way, but it is the only way I do it any more. Your opinions may vary.

That's why V8's are better than straight 8's, 2 heads are better than one.
