  • RS engines with flat top pistons???

I picked up a RS engine from as 63 Avanti and the heads were off and I could see flat top pistons, didn't the flat top piston go in the R-1 and R-4 engines??

Yes Bob, they had flat tops. If it is a RS engine then the compression was held down to 9:1 by use of lower compression truck heads for use with the supercharger.

Sound like a cool find to me. Any other identifying marks or stamps in the tops?

R4 engines did not have flat top pistons.

Actually, it is easier to say the majority of Studebaker V8s had flat top pistons. The only V8s which DID NOT have flat top pistons were the few R4s and standard 289"s. All the 224", 232", 259", R1, R2 and R3 engines had flat top pistons.

The reason I mention this is one newbie came to me all excited because he had found a Stude V8 with flat top pistons and was convinced he had a rare R-series. Turned out to be a rusty old 259".
