View Full Version : Late 30's hood hinge adjustment....?

Hey fellas,

Every time I close the hood on my '37 coupe express, the back end of the hood (nearest the windshield) needs to be pushed down a 1/2 inch or so. Where can I get hood adjustment procedure information? Also, wondering if Jeff, or anyone with a coupe express can tell me the width of your tailgate? Purchased a remanufactured one from a gentleman who is highly recommended, but for some reason the gap between the gate and bed sides seems excessive, in spite of the fact that the bed width seems to be in specs? Thanks, Jimmy

Hey Jimmy...
I just went out and measured mine and it is 48&1/4 inches...top and bottom. I can go out and measure the new repro one tomorrow morning, if you'd like me to...
My box had to be tweaked a bit to get the sides vertical and square.
(not to mention it was racked a bit too, which is hard to do knowing the floor is steel...)

About the hood...
Mine will hang the rh rear corner a bit high when I close it.
Maybe a half inch.
I just reach over and push it down. It stays down after I push it down. Of interest is that I have two nitrogen strut cylinders in there to help hold the hood up. They are pretty weak (25 pounds or so), but they are just enough to hold it up, as the springs on the hinges were not designed to hold the hood up (which they actually do a bit...until the wind blows or something).. Perhaps the cylinders push my hood forward a tad and that helps hold the rear of the hood down..
I did notice that it definitely needs a rubber bumper/spacer to hold it (the rear of the hood) up to the cowl surface height. I have a long piece of Rubber that Steels says is for it, but I only used two 1" pieces of that rubber (mounted about where the wiper stands are) rather than the whole strip. I have never had a problem with it. I can get some pic's if that would help you out.
Let me know...

I have a 37 Dictator coupe with the same prob. except I can't push it down. If you find a fix, please let me know.

Thanks Jeff....

I just went out and measured my bed opening. It's slightly differant between top and bottom, but I'm basically getting very close to specs (48 5/8). The new tailgate (depending on which tape measure I'm using) is between 48 even and 48 1/8. That still puts me somewhere around 1/8 - 3/16ths on each side (just seems to look wider). As long as I know I'm in the ballpark, I can break my mig out and "tweek" a nice solid gap. As far as the hood is concerned...again as long as I know it's a common problem, I can deal with it. I was thinking about fabricating a hidden hood latch set up there anyway, with the release under the dash. Thanks again, Jimmy

Went out and took some pic's for clarification...
Clear as mud.
Here's a pic of the hood's RH side when it is hung 'up' a little bit.

A little push and it slides right down ok.
Here's a look at the RHS closed (so you can see the gap)

and the front center view..closed.

And the hinge setup...

And a shot of the struts..

You'll notice I don't have the radiator hoop on mine. Took it off and built some lowered pieces and made new stainless cowl rods.

Hope the info helps...
