  • Electrical: Backup lights on '63 Avanti don't work

The backup lights don't work on my '63 with automatic trans. Coincidentally, it will not start in neutral either. Is there some kind of neutral safety switch that may be messed up? Thanks.

Page 90 of the Avanti chassis and body parts manual shows two switches one for backup one for neutral safety. These are found as part of the floor shift mechanism. They are activated by two small rods between shifter and switches. Part #'s back up 1557359, starter switch 1558650. Could be bad switches or rods bent or ?? Lou Cote RQB 4240

Back up adj, place selecter in "R" ,lossen switch mounting adjustment screw, align 3/32' holes in switch lever and the mounting bracket. hold the holes in alignment - tighten adjusting screws. Neutral safety adj., Place selector in "N" position, loosen switch mounting adjustment screw, align the 3/32" holes as above, . Hold holes in alignment - tighten adj., screws. Try out, MAKE SURE starter operates ONLY in "P" or "N". Lou Cote RQB 4240
