On my 51 Champion, the license plate light is integral to the trunk latch handle, shining down on the plate. My new wiring harness has the pigtail for this light terminating near the rear bumper-center. I assume (dangerous, I know)that the wire I must supply goes into the trunk, then back near the hinge, and up to the inside of the latch handle. This is typicl of modern cars, but the modern hinges are quite a bit different. Any suggestions on how to do this to ensure the hinge doesn't eat the wire? The chassis manual isn't any help here.

How was the original wiring run? If you haven't removed the old wiring yet, I'd run a parallel wiring to the original. Get a pair of connectors and rerun the wire back at the tail panel to where the old wiring heads up to the deck lid.

OR, make two connectors, run a seperate length of wire from the tail panel to the hinge area of the deck lid, make the second connector for the deck lid wiring. This would be in case the license lamp wiring is bound in the harness and you don't want to try to fish it out.

Paul, here is a picture of the trunk on a 47 coupe that is on eBay now. You can see the wire hanging to the left of the hinge. I think my 52 Commander is the same way, but my car is in the shop so I can't tell. I will check tomorrow. I think the wire is encased in a braided cloth tube so the wire is not exposed.

Thanks Leonard, that helps. I fugured it might be something like that, however there was no "original" to copy, Tom. When I got the car long ago, the license plate light was not hooked to anything, just a pigtail about 6" hanging behind the latch. There was a taped up hot (when lights on) wire in the original harness that went nowhere... Most of the electrical has been in such bad shape until now, I'm surprised anything worked without catching fire. New harness is great, but I'm still trying to get a few things working (Horn, turn signals, etc.) Originally my car didn't have turn signals either, so that's a challenge.
