It looks like the clips are just pushed on. If it was me, to keep from bending/damaging the mesh, I would take a thin ziz-wheel (cutoff wheel) in a rotary air grinder (or maybe a small dremel-type tool) and very carefully cut off one of the two 'tabs' on each clip. You will have to get some new clips but those are available in a number of diferent styles.

Care fully grab the outside of the clips with needle nosed pliers and twist and pull.

The clips on the two studs are "friction nuts" and I remove them with a right angle dental pick or scribe. Slide the tip of the pick into the gaps of the friction nut so that the spring steel bends away from the stud ( not too hard) and they will come off. I sanded the Studebaker S with very fine sandpaper (500 grit +) to remove the pits and then painted with rattle can gold.

I appreciate the quick response and help!

Where can I get the new clips? how do I put them on, are they pushed down on the post?

Many hardware suppliers carry them. I've bought them locally at well stocked retail hardware stores but you can get them from Grainger or McMaster-Carr on line. Look for "speed nuts".

Most any body shop that's been around for a while has those clips in several sizes.

There is a radio service listed in the "parts & Service" section of Turning Wheels (Mr Skismore ???). Also, previously of Pismo Beach and now in Oceano/Grover Beach, CA is "Bob's Radio" He did mine to original specs (AM only) and also converts to stealth AM-FM Stereo.

Mine twisted off without a lot of trouble and slid back on when the job was done... BUT it was quite a task to get them back on tight without bending the grill or scraping the newly painted S.

The "S" was originally gold plated. There are some home plating kits on the market but the job only looks as good as the surface underneath and by now that is often pitted up. Thus paint works pretty well.

Back some years ago several vendors had just the "S" in stock as NOS. It has its own part number.
