  • Engine: Champion - Pulling Oil Pump Gear

In preparation for a long trip, I am rebuilding the oil pump on a '50 Champion (car) engine.
I have purchased the rebuild kit (from SI). In reading the service manual the (driven) pump gear requires a special tool, specifically a # J2959.
I tried removing the same gear from a junk Champion engine I have and it did not go well. It is apparent I need the tool or know a trick for getting the gear off. It looks to be a keyed shaft and presummably it is an "interference fit".

Is there a way to remove the gear without the tool?
If the tool is required, where do I borrow, rent, or purchase it?

    Doug,

I had the same issue and made a tool to remove the gear. Yes it is interference fit and it uses a key to fix it rotationally. The tool is composed of six components:

    1. Actuator bolt
    2. Actuator rod
    3. Brass adapter for actuator bolt
    4. Steel pipe adapter
    5. Pipe
    6. Pulling plate

Note that the pulling plate is round except for the area to clear the gear to be pulled. The plate also has a chamfer ramp to make easier to rotate under the gear. You can eliminate the actuator rod if you bolt is long enough. The brass adapter just adapts the pipe thread to the bolt thread.

Basically you just slide the assembly onto the non-driven gear shaft, rotate the assembly 180 degrees, and while holding the assembly, tighten the actuator bolt. As you tighten the actuator bolt, the pulling plate pulls out the gear.

StudeM15A-20 Rescue Project I bought this old Stude truck off ebay in 2010 and have been working on it since. I don't plan to restore it but just get it in useful condition and enjoy it's utility.
