Looks like a transmission cooler stuck between the grille and radiator.

There's a fella, name of Mike Schere (SP?) who races a black '59 Lark. I can't remember now if it's a hardtop or a sedan, but it's got a 259 in it and he was running some eye-popping times with just a 4-bbl carb![:0]
