  • Transmission / Overdrive: Odd markings on truck tranny...

Okay... got the tranny home a few weeks ago from Gustafson's and noticed that the numbers on the cover and body don't match. That is to say, the case has, "T88 - lV,' and underneath that, "WG DIV." While the cover has, "T98 148H," then a W in a circle underneath with a tag (or casting that looks like a tag) that says, "3-7." It's a top-shift tranny with a Hurst shift lever.

Oh yes, I almost forgot; the speedo arrangement looks like the one on my GMC. It's completely different from what's on the truck now.

    So... any guesses anyone?

That speedo connector was used on a world of older trucks, with all kinds of transmissions.
The trans you have there is the same as a 56-62 Ford, except for the main shaft (input shaft)

The speedometer adapter is an aftermarket gearbox to correct slight speedometer error if different size tires were used. If you remove it you will usually find the stock setup will bolt back in place.

Borg Warner sold its transmissions to a LOT of makes, not just Studebaker. Ford, Chevy, Jaguar, and a dozen other makers bought and used BW's transmissions. Sometimes the only differences between a Ford transmission and a Studebaker transmission (for example), was the input shaft and the mounting bolt pattern.

Didn't this trans come out of a Studebaker truck? It looks like a Studebaker input shaft. If it was in a V8 truck, and you're putting it in a V8 truck, then I can't think of any reason why it won't work.

Yeah, I knew that BW sold trannys industry-wide. My concern is not weather the tranny will work with my motor, I know it likely will. My concern had to do with weather the speedo would work, gears would be compatible with the rear-end, etc... Looks like my concerns were unwarranted. Still, the two sets of numbers is weird...

As to the original source, it's that '60 Champ I've spoken of in Gustafson's yard in Redding. It was a V8, though the engine is long gone.
