    How do you determine which shoe is the primary and the secondary.

    Primary has shorter lining than secondary. The primary goes on front.

      The shoe location also depends on whether the brake system is self energizing or anchored brakes. The earlier cars prior to 1954 and the light duty trucks prior to 1963 did not use the self energizing brake set up. They would have the shorter lining on the rear side of the backing plate. Bud

        True....and also, the disc brake cars are this way too.
