    Bullet Nose Stock Car

Neat photo of Roy Bentley of Florence, SC, racing down the front stretch of the Darlington (SC) Raceway in the first "Southern 500" NASCAR race on September 4, 1950.
Roy's Studebaker was a 1950 4 door Champion. He started 39th in a field of 75 cars and finished 47th completing 319 of the 400 laps in the event. Roy was the highest finishing of the three Studebakers that were in the field.
The #98 Plymouth following Roy was the winning car. This was piloted by Johnny Mantz of Long Beach, CA.

Further research has shown that there were sister Champion race cars running numbers 42 and 43. Roy Bentley was in 42 while Shorty York was in 43. Photos of both cars show the same sponsor, Super Motor & Tractor Co. Shorty finished in 20th position.
