'55 Commander with stick and OD today after about 10 miles driving in the morning with no problems and about 7 in the evening with no problem, as I was accelerating just after OD kicked in the engine cut out on me for just a fraction of a second.....then again even more briefly about 2 miles later. I'm thinking coil or distributor related, maybe points, condenser or one of the small wires. Any ideas?

Could even be a sticking OD relay since it interrupts the ignition when the OD kicks in.

OK, I can try to check it out and clean the terminals and points.....maybe it was agitated by the 90 degree weather which it hasn't seen in awhile. This did occur both times right at OD engagement. Thanks.

Could be the overdrive kickdown switch on the throttle linkage. If it were sticking, it could cause the engine to cut out. It is supposed to just interrupt the engine for an instant so it can kick out of overdrive (like a passing gear). If it was to stick, it could kill the engine.

Let's not forget that that switch works in concert with a pair of contacts in the solenoid as well.
