View Full Version : Accessory windshield washer system

At some point in the past, a Studebaker Accessory windshield washer system was added to my '63 Hawk. It is the "pedal" type with a micro switch built in with 3 wires leading out of it...

The wires were never hooked up. There is a blue wire, a yellow wire, and a yellow wire with a black tracer...

I assume the wires tie into the windshield wiper switch and activate the wipers when you press the squirter. Maybe even turn them off after a couple of swipes?

Does anybody know exactly where the wires connect?

What's the AC number for this system?

Is it correct for my '63 Hawk?

The water bag is mounted to the fan shroud...

'63 hawks require the 1540398 Bracket (may be the one on your shroud), the 1545092 Hanger, and the correct Batt. Hold Down 1323655. Hawks do mount on the Batt. hold down.

The SDC keeper of the Accessory templates and instructions, should have the wiring diagram. The parts and accessory price list for 1963 lists the AC numbers, applications and prices. The newest one I could find (1961) shows AC3111 for Automatic kit for all 1961 passenger cars.

Dick, you have AC-3397, or possibly AC-3396 (manual system) that has been upgraded using pump/switch assm 1559268. Either is correct for the '63 Hawk. To connect it, remove yellow wire from wiper switch terminal 'D' and connect it to the yellow wire from the pump. Connect the yellow wire with black tracer coming from the pump to the 'D' terminal on the wiper switch. Remove blue wire from wiper switch 'A' and connect it to the male portion of the pump blue wire (piggy back) and then install that blue wire back on the wiper switch 'A' terminal.

I'll wire it up tomorrow.

I'm having a hard time visualizing the fluid bag hanging off the battery mount. If it's on the right side (inside) of the battery it hangs on the exhaust manifold (maybe that provided heated water to deice the windshield [:o)]). On the immediate front of the battery is the brake booster...no room. On the left of the battery (outside) there isn't enough room between the top of the battery and the apron for the bag. On the rear of the battery is the firewall and no room for the bag.

Does anybody have a picture of the bag mounted off the battery hold down on a GT Hawk?

(Hey Rich...notice I rotated the pedal pads. Thanks for your heads up on that)

The 1545092 hanger that Rich listed is a "U" shaped piece of wire (like coat hanger wire) that goes under the battery hold down. Then the 1540398 bracket attaches to this and the washer bag to the bracket. It does hang on the exhaust manifold side of the battery but obviously works fine there.

OK...hooked up the wires. Piece of cake...Thanks again Dwain.

What the connections to the switch do is to pause the wipers (after you turn them on with the normal switch) when you depress the squirter pedal. I guess this makes some sense so that the jets of water aren't brushed aside from their intended target by the wipers (but not much sense).

Is this the way they are supposed to work? If so, it was pretty much a "gimmick" IMHO.

I always thought it would run the wipers as long as you were pushing the pedal, or a couple swipes if you pressed and let off. Nothing happens unless you turn the main switch on first? Light steady pressure on the pump pedal will give a continuous spray that should last for several swipes, which seems the way it should work?
Dick, how long is the delay? Will it continue to operate that way indefinitely? Would it be a satisfactory drizzle wiper?

What it does (when you press the pedal) is turn the wipers OFF (once you've turned them ON at the switch). It does nothing (except spray the windshield) with the wiper switch OFF. It would probably work as a drizzle wiper, but maybe tiring on the left foot.

The operation makes some sense electrically. It's not hooked in to the white wire with the black tracer at the switch which is the power wire...it's only hooked into the wires to the motor from the switch. All it can do is to interrupt the power to the motor (and I think it is also telling the motor not to park). The switch at the pedal is normally closed, but open when you depress the pedal.

Pressing the pedal and holding it does give a continuous spray for several seconds.

The one on my Lark turned ON the wipers for about 5 or 6 swipes,with the wipers switch on the dash OFF. I think that is the way they were supposed to work.[wash the windshield without removing your hands from the wheel]

Dick, something isn't right.....when the pedal is depressed the wipers should go. They will continue as long as the pedal is held down.....this is if the switch on the dash is turned off. If the dash switch is on, the only result of pedal pressing is to squirt fluid.

Hmmmm....can you crawl under your dash, Tim, and let me know if you see the same three wires I have and if they are hooked as Dwain described?

Yes, what Dwain said makes perfect sense. The blue gets doubled up with the blue that is already on the switch, the yellow comes off and connects to the pump yellow and the yellow with black goes in its place on the switch. Maybe your switch is installed upside down and is consequently wired backwards? The breaker on my switch is on the drivers side of the switch.

My switch is down for low speed and up for high speed, so I guess it is in right side up. My guess is that the switch in my foot pump is corroded or something. I'll take it apart and see what it looks like.

Yellow should be at the top of the switch and the doubled up blues should be on the driver's side, if that helps.

Dick, you can run a quick check with a test light or your Fluke. At the washer switch both yellow wires should have Bat voltage with key on. So should the blue wire when the little pedal is pressed.

I have a factory-installed windshield washer like you describe on my '63 Hawk. The wipers come ON whenever the foot-operated switch is activated. It is real handy for a brief wipe of the windshield when there isn't enough rain to require the wipers full-time. All done without taking a hand off the steering wheel. Sort of substitutes for the delayed wiper setting found on newer cars. Obviously, to spray water on the windshield you need to press the foot bulb hard enough to push water out. But, just tapping the foot switch starts the wipers without spraying and they run until normally seating at the bottom of the windshield, which can be as brief as one wiping motion. Much more useful than the plainer system without the foot switch.

Yep, mine obviously isn't working correctly. Dwain passed me a few more troubleshooting tips via email. Thanks Dwain. Most likely the trouble is in the switch at the washer pedal. I'll pull it out and see what I can do. Thanks, all, for your help.

EVERYTHING works in this car from the lighter to the radio to the clock, etc...I CAN'T have a non op automatic windshield washer!
