  • 1961 hawk climatizer

I have removed the heater core from under the seat in my hawk, after removing the heater duct that is connected uner the car I noticed the opening in the heater core frame had a big cloth in it. I don't know if this is suppose to be a filter or were they stuffing this in there to stop air or something(mice) from getting in. Question is the climatizer suppose to have a open area where the large duct just connects to tray under the core? It would make cents that way the air could flow though the tray and then up though the heater core.

No filters I'm aware of; should be a clean air flow. Those things were pretty effective. Maybe someone thought they put out too much heat and decided to muffle the duct, rather than reduce the coolant flow with the heater control, or maybe it was an issue with rodents, though I haven't seen any who didn't see a piece of cloth as an invitation.
