View Full Version : want to trade overdrive solenoids?

I am getting ready for a 12 volt conversion (installing A/C). I have an extra 6 volt overdrive solenoid I think is good, anyway it snaps when I put power to it. I want to do the modern relay conversion as shown on Chuck's page, but I really don't want to modify a good 6 volt solenoid. I could sell it on ebay, but then I would be looking for a solenoid to modify anyway. What I'd like to do is to trade my good (I think) 6 volt solenoid for a broken 6 volt solenoid and some money, or for a good 12 volt solenoid. Anybody up for that?

Whacker,
Where is this page you are talking about, that shows how to modify a 6v OD solenoid? All I found is the one on Chuck Collins' site about repairing a stock 6v OD relay by putting a new "black box" relay into the guts of it:
https://www.studebakerparts.com/studebakerparts/parts/html/pages/relay.html

You are right, though, to say you need to replace the 6v solenoid with one designed for 12v. Are you just wanting to trade your 6v solenoid (the part that sticks out the side of your overdrive unit on the back of the transmission) for a 12v solenoid? I do see those come up on eBay regularly. Just do a search on eBay for these terms:
overdrive (sol*oid, sel*oid)
and you'll turn up some that may not mention Studebaker, but should be correct, as they were used on several brands of cars.

If it turns out that you are really talking about the OD relay when you say "solenoid", then you simply need to get one of those same Radio Shack relays, as they are meant to be triggered by 12v (but can work with as low as 6v). Unless you are going for a stock appearance, this relay can be attached to the chassis very easily, as it has a mounting hole in it.

I have installed three of these on my truck: 2 for headlights (low and high) and 1 for the horn. I can help you with the wiring diagram, if needed.

I'm glad you found what you need, but I'm still in limbo about the page you're talking about. 'Splain it to me, Lucy.
