I think someone did a switch-a-roo with a later model Avanti II

Rectangular headlights started appearing about 1975.

Dick is correct, I think they first appeared on 1975 GM cars...like th Monza coupe (rebodied Vega).
But Avanti's did not get them until the Steve Blake era of 1982...the same time when the car switched to plastic integral bumpers.

I'd like to see a picture of the car. Perhaps someone replaced JUST the headlight buckets with ones to accept the rectangular ones. That might look good on a '64 with the rectangular lenses.

Your Avanti was assembled by Studebaker during September 1963. There weren't any rectangular headlights that were legal for US use at that time. I believe that your car has (much) later Avanti II units or else the car was modified with European lights.
