  • And the perverbial Paxton bottom fell out

Well as the subject suggests, my poor Paxton supercharger on my 64 Commander has been slowly giving up its ghost over the past three days. Its been on my daily driver for the past 3-4 years It usually ran with a gentle *chuff* and a slight wheeze when you got into it. But it has become a low drone to a howl. Of course I couldnt here it because I had the radio on. To those who are going tsk tsk tsk about the radio, I have no stereo and I dont usually have the radio up over a quarter, lol. Its a very low but barely noticeable whine. So I pulled the belt off and turned the pulley. I can't turn it smoothly, its a lock-turn-lock-turn like I gotta square bearing.
So I figure, anybody have a line to a good supercharger that came from a running car. The one on there now will of course need a rebuild, but I would like a second unit in the meantime. I will be looking around at South Bend next weekend as well. I will be around there Friday afternoon through the end of the meet. I know about Paradise Wheels, Lionel Stone, T-bow, etc. I was wondering on a whim if anybody had a good, used, usable unit for maybe less than 600 dollars? I would like to get this ol' girl the rest of her groove back maybe before the Nationals in June. Email is on my profile. I'm probably shooting for the moon, buts its worth a shot, lol

I keep kicking around the spare parts vs just fixing things also. Its
always seem to be the best money to just fix the broken part, rather
than get a second. Usually the second needs to be fixed also, or it
needs it shortly after being installed.

Spare parts are always good. I have learned long ago with before I got my 45 amp motorola alternator to have another 35 or 40 amp alternator, as they had the lifespan of 6 months. We have a number of power steering pumps, 35 and 40 amp alternators and the various other ordinary items, such as power boosters when they blow. I like having backups and spares for these situations, even if they come from a vendor table for very little, but I myself dont have anything to replace it as a temporary. For me this is a highly unusual situation as this doesnt blow as regularly as the ps pumps or the alternators. This will have to get fixed or rebuilt no doubt, but I'd like to get something that I can use for a couple months in the meantime. In short, somebody has something they took off of a car to replace it with a better unit such as a Novi for the SN60, I'd appreciate it.

It might be worth taking apart and looking for the problem. I have seen balls that spaule(sp) and the center race is ok. If that would be the problem you could be back on the road for less than $20. Lon shot but worh looking.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think I got it somewhat under control. I have another paxton that I managed to get on it today whilest I get this one rebuilt. Its got a problem that feels like it may need more than a couple shots of WD-40 and a slap on the rear . Something has come apart inside with the way it turns, so I'll have to run down a rebuild kit in SB. It just feels good, even temporarily to be able to keep pace with traffic again, lol.

The supercharger that was on Ebay: 320107690456, was an "MS". It's drilled for only an Avanti style side mount. I don't think the existing holes allow "reclocking" to get the volute in the right position for a Lark/Hawk setup, either. Of course more holes could be drilled; but there are people looking for an original "MS" for their Avanti's. I've seen "SN" units with extra holes filled with bondo; to make them look like "MS" types.
"ML" Paxton's were made for the Lark/Hawk mounts. There was one of those, listed on Ebay as for a Golden Hawk, a week or so ago. I don't think it met reserve.
As far as I know, the only differences between the two, MS/ML, is what mounting holes are drilled, and the pulley.

                            Hi,
as bad as it feels I would just put up with the car without the blower till it comes back rebuilt. The car will work OK but may use a little more fuel without the blower on the car. You might even be able to here the radio for a change instead of that wonderful person whistling under the bonnet....

Those blowers need to used and a rebuilt one that has sat incorrectly on the shelf for a few years may end up blowing the ball race as well.

I would treat any so called rebuilt or working blower as suspect anyway that wa sold loose, unless it came with pedigree from a known rebuilder of these items.

Those blowers are very reliable if rebuilt correctly and serviced well.

                            Regards
