View Full Version : Hawk radiator dimensions

I need to get measurements to a fellow to get a quote for redoing my radiator (1962 Hawk). Anyway, I was going to measure mine, but I really don't know how it is supposed to be measured. Does anyone here know the dimensions of a GT hawk radiator? Does height include the brass thing that covers the core (the thing you put the cap on)?

The radiator man said he wouldn't be surprised if a recore would cost $400 now.[:0][:0][:0][:0] He said the cost of materials has skyrocketed. Now I'm scared, because I've been putting it off because I thought $300 quoted off the cuff a couple years ago from another shop was too high.

Anyway, I guess I need dimensions. This guy feels a three core, or whatever was stock will be adequate and there's no need to go for a thicker core. I don't know anything about radiators.

You can get a Summit aluminum, 2 row for about $180.00..

entire rad - 22 3/4 X 26 3/4
Core - 17 3/4 X 24 3/4

and like I said, a Summit 2 row aluminum fits right in the support

With the price of copper and brass now, that is certainly the way to go!

I looked at Summit's site and they say nothing about Studebakers. I suppose I could call them. Does aluminum have a problem being in contact with brass? How would the core be fastened to the top part of the radiator? Would I get a core and then take mine out and have a radiator guy take the top of my currect one and fasten it to the new aluminum core?

As I said, I know nothing about radiators. Thanks for your help!

The Summit piece is not a core, it's the entire radiator - generic type, right size, the holes are in the right places, etc. It doesn't look like a Stude radiator at all. You have to make it fit and hook it up, however considering your last response, you ought to go with your local rad shop recore.. I was just trying to satisfy the 'cheaper' aspect..

Can you post up the Summit number for others reading this thread? Is
there also one found that fits an Avanti?;)

Actually I bought this for my Avanti, and it looked a bit small but will cool fine and it fits the hawk just as well. I'll get the numbers today sometime. It was purchased last year, so, is probably higher these days.

Summit 380325, still $169.00
25.5" wide / 19.75 high / 1 3/4" hose openings

Brackets 380100 $16.95, but you could probably make them easily.


This does not have a trans cooler. You can get one for another $100.00, but I'll opt for a separate cooler system

Thanks, Bob. I'm going to consider it, becuase the other option might be prohibitively expensive. If I buy one of these and put it in I could always go back to the stock one later after re-doing it, couldn't I? I want to drive my Hawk this summer and and am hesitant with the current radiator, especially since the engine was rebuilt and I don't want to risk overheating it. :(

The bracket kit to install the Summit is just a couple pieces of angle steel. Go by "Casa Depot" and get some flat stock and make your own. While you're there, go to the plumbing section and pick up some rubber gasket (orange stuff) to line the brackets and buffer the radiator or better, if you have a piece of inner tube laying around. This doesn't have a rad cap either, so a Moroso 63730 filler neck (about $25) is needed.
Just a little time and thought, is all it takes to put this together..

Were the original radiators 2 row? Was there a difference between factory AC equipped cars and non AC cars?

Yes there is always a difference between air conditioned cars cooling systems and non-A/C. The standard Stude. radiators in Hawks & Larks were all 2 row (except Jet-Thrust). The 3 row was optional for hot climates and all factory air conditioned cars and was usually used with a higher pitch bladed 6 or 7 blade HD fan and on A/C equipped units a viscous drive (high-speed cut out) fan was used.
