What is a good oil pressure reading on a 259 V-8? My Power Hawk has 42,000 miles on it and smokes a little bit. It sat for about 20 years before I recently started driving it (all the oil, fluids, etc. were changed). Right now the gauge, which I assume is correct, usually reads between 55-60 psi. Just wondering it that was good, ok, or bad because I don't really know.

Oil Pressure?????

A Studebaker V8 with good bearings should hold around 50lbs of pressure at higher rpm and around 20 to 25 at idle with the engine hot. The oil pressure will be higher when the engine is cold or only partially warmed up. If the pressure drops considerably when the engine warms up, it could be due to worn bearings or possibly the engine oil viscosity is too low . Have you done a mileage check of the oil consumption? If the engine uses less than a quart of oil per thousand miles, I wouldn't worry about it. Studebaker V8 engines also suffer from excess oil running down the valve guides due to wear and bad valve stem seals which will cause exhaust smoke. Bud
