1956 new car sales registry. Is your car on the list?

In a previous thread I mentioned that I have some dealership record books in my collection. They are all from Newman & Altman in South Bend. I previously thought that I had books from 1959 to 1965, but stand corrected. The books are from 1954 to 1965. The majority of the information in them is payroll, but the last one from 1965 has the complete list of new cars sold by N&A in 1965 (as well as used, but no serial numbers for those cars). One night this past week I started doing some digging in these books and copied all of the new car buyer names and the car serial numbers. Three days later, the list was complete... Give or take, all the names are spelled correctly according to the book and all the numbers are correct. So here is the list; is YOUR car on is?

If this generates any interest, I also have the book from 1954 which has fewer numbers. That book has all ENGINE NUMBERS only, but I'm not sure about it. That book reads new car sales: PACKARD ENGINE NUMBERS.

Also, the vehicle number for Jacob Walter seems to have an extra number in it.

Also, Thomas W. Hansen and Howard Helvey have the same vehicle number.

We appreciate you doing this, but if the data is going to be useful, it MUST be accurate!

Thanks, Chris. Interesting information. I see a lot of 1963 and 1964 cars still being sold new in 1965. There are some Avantis. There seems to be a high percentage of V8 cars.

I believe Brook Motors was a Studebaker dealer in Mishawaka on Mc Kinnley Hwy.

There are several dealer trades in that list. When I was at the SNM archives a few years back looking at my local dealer's sales info, he'd fill out the same type card for a dealer trade as he would a retail sale.

Interesting that one of the sales listed by Chris is for Andrew Petras, M.D. Andy Petras works at SI in South Bend! Maybe his son or grandson.

Chris; I don't think you mean '65 cars, I think you mean cars that were sold in 1965!

There are lots of '63's and '64's there that must have been delivered at N&A, but from the Studebaker Corp. surplus (leftover) lot, IF they were sold in '65.

I also noted that Mr. Pratt and Mr. Frederisk bought consecutive Serial numbered '64 V-8 cars, 64V16308 & 64V16309!

Chris, first thanks so much for taking the time to share all that info with us!

Second, even having lived in South Bend all my life, there was only one name on the entire list I recognized.

It was the name of the very first person to "greet me" when I entered this world!!!

65 years and 3 days ago today in South Bend's St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. Andrew Petrass delivered me ...with the able body help of my mother, of course!

“White Hawk” this is all very interesting ...at least to the wife & me!!! The Dr. that delivered me spelled his name the good old Hungarian way ...PETRASS ...but I'm sure we are talking about the same Doc.

In 1965 my then girlfriend (now wife of 43+ years) totaled her '57 White Silver Hawk. She then bought a White '59 Hawk from a place at the corner of SR 23 (Prairie Ave.) and Indiana Ave. …about a mile towards town from where Dr. Petrass lived. What do you suppose the chances are …????

Well, I just looked in the N&A book. There is no info on what Dr. Petrass traded in. All it really says is the date he bought the car, serial number, price, and general stuff for the dealership like item stock numbers.
